Google is from Venus, Social Sites are from Mars

To put it simply, Google applications are made for getting things done - you move on once you get what you want from its search engine or maps. More importantly, they encourage actions, but not so much about giving feedbacks to what other people out there are doing.

Social networks, on the other hand, are more about fun and an action-reaction loop. These platforms draw your attention with social feeds, friends on your network or Like buttons, all of which act like addictive junk food that keeps us lingering around the websites.

Since the core values of platforms generated by Google and online social networks are fundamentally different, it is important to differentiate your marketing purposes accurately and choose the right platform to launch your marketing campaigns on. Do you aim at connecting with your (potential) customers as an extension of your services, or do you want to attract more eyes and traffic from people who are very likely to have the intention to buy your products?

Misplacement of these purposes with different online marketing platforms would be counter-productive, no doubt; as for the possibility of a hybrid of social and Google applications, it depends on when Google will ditch its view that social networking was an entertainment instead of real utility, and how fast it could catch up when that day comes.
