Since the drilling rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in April, British Petroleum (BP) has been fighting hard to save the company’s image and handle its interactions with different groups in the global community. Part of the company’s damage control strategies involves purchasing search items related to the incident, such as "oil spill" and "gulf oil disaster". Such act was intended to "…make it easier for people to find out more about our efforts in the Gulf", as the company’s spokesman explained.

The extension of SEO execution from brand building or marketing to damage control is very insightful, since the act of using search engines to obtain updates or more in-depth information about current affairs or commercial products has become a common practice among most internet users; even the word "google" is gradually used as a verb. It is time to think out of the box, and consider the possibilities of using SEO in other arenas surrounding brand image management, on top of marketing or sales boost.
