Apple declares War on Google |
30 March 2010 |
Earlier this month, Apple launched a lawsuit against Taiwan mobile phone manufacturer HTC over 20 counts of patent infringement. HTC, the manufacturer of Google's Android phones, comes to be the scapegoat in this cold war between Google and Apple. The iPhone maker is demanding monetary compensations as well as a permanent suspension of importing and selling of any phones based on Google's Android operating system. Google's latest smartphone Nexus One, will bear the brunt of it as it has many more devices installed than any other Android phones.
Although Apple's iPhones are more widely sold than Android, it is predicted that Android devices will outpace iPhone in the long run. Google sticks to their issued statement, "we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it".
Lawsuits like these occurred between Nokia and Apple as the two rivalries filed patent suits against each other. Patents are powerful tools to attack rivalries for defensive purposes.
Will Apple manage to eliminate Google from the smartphone industry? If Google is branching out in the smartphone arena, will Apple expand its technologies in the search engine market? Things remain yet to be seen.
