Gold Star Series No.1: Bring in More Bucks or Bugs? |
24 November 2009 |
The Internet has now become an inseparable part of our world where even the tiniest change can arouse heated debates or even minor commotions. Goggle's latest updates on AdWords by adding a Gold Star next to a paid ad has caused panic among netizens and advertisers as Google AdWords was considered to be hacked.

"We are currently running a limited test in which a small number of users are seeing ads that are marked based on signals related to quality and relevance. This experiment is part of our ongoing efforts to help users find what they're looking for, and we're closely monitoring feedback." - Google
The star seems to give a higher relevance to ads than the others as it is assigned only to ads of higher quality and relevance, as stated above. It is likely that companies will pay extra efforts on search engine optimization for the exclusive gold star. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how a Gold Star is "awarded" or what it truly stands for. More information about the Gold Star is still yet to be confirmed.
While it is certain that this starry move will bring in more revenues for Google, users of the search engine are concerned about the risks of the star turning into a target for hackers. Will the gold star become a tool to attract bucks for Google, or bugs for users?
Google's Gold Star is still in its trial period.
