Google Dashboard Ready, but Users are not at the Wheel

Google Dashboard, another new feature launched this morning, is not received with as much enthusiasm as its precedents. It is a list of data which records all the activities performed by a user on a selection of Goggle's products including Gmail, Google Finance, YouTube and much more. As Google puts it, the "scale and level of detail of the Dashboard is unprecedented". Logging on to the Google Dashboard account, one can gain instant access to these data and customize the settings of the listed Google's services all at once. The Dashboard is regarded by Google to be a big step to "transparency, choice and control".

However, the new feature has been drawing more criticisms than appreciations so far. Many do not find this re-assembling of personal data particularly interesting and useful. On the contrary, the Dashboard serves as the reminder of Google's complete control over people's data which is a valuable asset to advertising companies. The new feature with the so-called personal account seems more a tactic to hush up complaints about the rising concerns of corporate's use of people's data. Being able to log onto the Dashboard account does not prevent Google from keeping track of people's activities on its services.

Collecting and storing personal data is crucial in boosting the conversion and click rates for companies as Google manages to deliver more relevant Ads to its users. While this may be good news to the online marketing arena which could better target their customers, the bargain for the available data with Google would be hard.
