Facebook Tightens Privacy Policies |
11 September 2009 |
Currently if you agreed to use a Facebook application, you shared all your user data without knowing where the data goes. Complained for long finally this social networking giant got reviewed by Canadian Privacy Commissioner.
Facebook took quick actions following the report of its incompliance to Canadian Privacy Law. Starting next year users consent will be reached prior to access to the applications, and the application developers will need to restrict its information access to target divisions and categories.
"Privacy policies are often confusing and incomplete," noted by the Commissioner. Facebook accounts are said to be deactivated, but not deleted, leaving the question of whether personal data are removed after deactivation. In response to legal concerns Facebook updated its disclaimer and privacy statements and clarified the operation of the advertising model. Escaping critical legal claims, the users concerns were not responded though.
Facebook actions will be global. The developers hope to relieve global concerns, but actually they may be doing the opposite. The privacy law defers greatly from states to states with different measures and levels of requirements. Expectedly legal investigations on Facebook privacy policies will spread worldwide. Fine tuning to local requirements will be crucial to resolve upcoming privacy crisis.
Confidentiality will continue to be a great concern in social media marketing. While marketers enjoy the benefits they receive from the use of social media platform as a tool to improve business, they should always take up the responsibility of protecting the well being of their audience. Some marketers are keen to take adventurous moves on the execution of their business operations. The risk they take may earn them unprecedented rewards, but a professional marketer shall always remind themselves to behave ethically if they want their business to last long, and learn from the crisis Facebook had to deal with for its overbearing move.
