Feeling Indecisive? ‘Hunch’ Your Decision

Recently Flickr's co-founder Caterina Fake launches a new mode of search, Hunch.

The service appears in the form of an online decision-making kit, leading users to desired search results by asking a set of relevant questions. When you feel like you have difficulties in deciding on something (even small things like a coffee choice), you can enter a search topic in Hunch, and you will be asked a set of questions (decision tree) before the service provides you its recommendation on your search topic.

The rest of it works like Wikipedia. You will be given 3 to 4 recommendations and the list can be edited by anyone. Besides, people can list the pros and cons about each of search results and interact with the others who come across the same search outcome. If the users feel like more information, they can click on the recommended links to continue reading.

Analyses are made on the powerfulness of Hunch. Some specialists think that it could be more powerful than the Google search ads on leading to higher ROI, but only when the recommendations are very right.

The search mode takes longer time than a traditional search as several questions have to be answered first. Yet the number of search results is quite small. They may not fit the user's needs if Hunch has not extensively developed on that specific search topic yet. Besides, when a user is truly in the position of making a purchase, he or she will be more inclined to search for the information of a specific product, rather than looking for recommendations that are completely new or unexplored.

The power of Hunch is yet to be explored. Nevertheless, its introduction proves the unlimited possibility of internet search technology.
