Social Media Defies Traditional Model |

Do you still have the concept that social media is ruled by teenagers? Recent reports about the social media behavior may twist your thought.
Recent reports revealed that engagement in social networks by people aged between 35 and 54 increased by 60% last year. While only 11% of Twitter users are between 12 and 17 - the traditional sweet spot of social media early adoption. Even Facebook and MySpace are maturing with only 9% of Facebook and 14% of MySpace users now being teenagers.
The traditional early-adopter model would say that teenagers or college students are really important to adoption. Twitter, takes off in a different demographic than one can expect and become very popular, is defying the traditional model.
The popular presence of politician in social media also reveals the global climate change. In the United States, Barack Obama embraces social media and always shares his views and thoughts to 6,656,387 supporters in Facebook. In Hong Kong, Wong Yuk Man, a politician of League of Social Democrats in Hong Kong, also used Facebook as a channel for canvassing. And they are not the only politician participates in the social media area.
It is clear that social media is growing up, and that is great news especially for entrepreneurs still scratching their heads about how to make money out of social media. The maturing of social media eventually means more desired target audiences, with sufficient money income and needs, now actively participate in the social media platform.
